“Ball at the Windsor Hotel, Montréal, in Honour of the Marquis of Lorne, 1879”
This photograph is an impressive composite shot. It was created by posing individual ball attendees in the studio at different points in time and according to a predetermined plan. Each photograph was then carefully retouched and placed into the final arrangement according to the sitter’s social rank, with the most prominent or honoured guests placed front and centre. Thus, while attending the ball had it perks, one’s ability to influence the event’s official photographer was arguably far more important.
